“We should not stop here,” says Suriya on Jallikattu protests
Suriya, who has always voiced his support for Jallikattu, penned a detailed statement on the ongoing issue and extended his helping hand to supporters who have united for the cause.
“Culture, Identity and History – words which only scholars and leaders were using till date have become more mainstream than ever before now. Today, Jallikattu has become the reason for the public, youth and students to stand up for their own culture, identity and history. Thanks to all those who advocated the ban of Jallikattu, you’ve actually brought the Tamil youth together to stand as one. Truth is always a part of a people’s movement.
Even as PETA won the case in the court of law for claiming that Jallikattu, that has been in practice for centuries altogether, they have lost their identity amongst all Tamilians. People who want the extinction of our indigenous bulls are claiming that bulls are being hurt because of Jallikattu.
In the recent protests, that drew participation from thousands of young men and women, the entire state’s feelings are being voiced loud and clear. I convey my heartfelt wishes to all those silent protestors who are fighting for our rights in a democratic way. Join hands with all of them. The protests that we are seeing will soon be over and we will succeed in it; the ban on Jallikattu will be removed. But, we should not stop here. If any other issue arises to bring down our culture, we should join hands yet again and protest as one with unity for issues that threaten our tradition and culture”
