Borderline watchable sequel.
VIP 2 is an average, time-pass outing which fully rides on Dhanush's antics and enjoyable screen presence. While it's not wise to compare two stand-alone films, VIP 2 cannot be viewed in the same breath. It may not break new barriers, but it is a time-pass affair with lots in it for every Dhanush fan.

VIP 2 is an average, time-pass outing which fully rides on Dhanush’s antics and enjoyable screen presence. While it’s not wise to compare two stand-alone films, VIP 2 cannot be viewed in the same breath. Logically, it’s a continuation of the first part, and has retained a lion’s share of characters from VIP. Hence, the comparisons are, needless to say inevitable.
The lack of interesting character arcs for Kajol and Amala Paul are the real let down in the film. While Kajol repeatedly boasts about the business empire she’s built on her own, Amala Paul has clearly overdone the nagging wife character. Both their roles are one-dimensional and do not leave an impact, except for Kajol’s majestic screen presence and a near-perfect lip sync.
Although Sean Roldan’s score is a fine effort, it’s Anirudh’s signature VIP theme tracks and background cues that elevate the film’s spirits at regular intervals and let Dhanush’s fans erupt in joy.
Soundarya’s eye for visuals and presentation warrants mention, though the screenplay, which is credited to her, doesn’t quite come together. Some memorable throwbacks to the first part are nicely portrayed on screen, courtesy
editor GK Prasanna.
Overall, VIP 2 is a mediocre directorial effort from Soundarya Rajinikanth. It may not break new barriers, but it is a time-pass affair with lots in it for every Dhanush fan.
