Directors like Vetrimaaran have made grounded mass entertainers work well with their realistic narrative, ability to build tension and characters that have multiple shades in them. In the same line, director SU Arunkumar’s Veera Dheera Sooran is a simplistic yet pulpy action thriller that slowly builds the momentum in the first half and goes blazing with the guns in the second half.
The director has put on his shoes which he used for his sophomore film Sethupathi, bringing in a story that has a solid amount of tension in it. The entire setting of Veera Dheera Sooran is something that takes place over a single night, and it is built with the four main characters of Kaali (Vikram), Arunagiri (SJ Suryah), Kannan (Suraj) and Periyavar (Prithvi Raj). All these four characters have been painted with grey shades in Arun’s script, and they all have enough to do in the runtime, without many deviations. Veera Dheera Sooran, being a film that takes place over a single night, doesn’t have too many deviations but for a flashback sequence, the entire film is made out of long scenes that come one after the other, with a purpose.
But sometimes, Arun’s scenes and screenplay make the scenes overstay their welcome, and that’s when Veera Dheera Sooran kind off starts to feel as a film that does not buy the excitement completely. There are many scenes that have the intensity in them, but feel elongated with way too many dialogues and overstretching of simplistic solutions.
It is Vikram’s massiest role in a long time, and as much fun the actor has doing it, he also brings out some of his vintage elements in it. SJ Suryah’s role of a cop is something unusual, and the rest of the actors have also done well in the film, barring Suraj who feels a bit out of place. Dushara Vijayan once again makes an impact in a role that not many can pull off.
GV Prakash’s BGM feels like the backbone of the film, and he does so much to elevate many scenes of the film. Theni Eshwar’s camerawork is decent, it feels a bit too raw at times.
On the whole, Veera Dheera Sooran has its flaws but it is a film that is worth watching for the excitement that it brings.
