Supreme Court issues new directions for tax exemption committee
Producer-distributor Udhayanidhi Stalin has won a long battle against discrimination in the state-appointed tax committee in granting exemption from entertainment tax. Supreme Court has issued new set of directions and protocol to be followed by the committe and the state government.
Henceforth, eligible applicants should be called within two weeks from the date of submission of application for tax exemption. The intimation to the producers for screening their films should be sent within three days from the date of submission of application. After screening, state-appointed committee should send its recommendation within a week to the state government, who should make its final decision upon issuance of tax free certificate within two weeks. Anothe important rule to be followed is the applicants should be called based on the chronology of the receipt of their applications.
