Vetrimaaran’s assistant Mathimaran is here with his debut venture, bringing out a fresh backdrop in the form of selling college seats and the dynamics around it. Selfie is a crime drama that adopts a very rustic, straightforward approach towards the backdrop that it picks and makes a neat and watchable drama out of it.
Kanal (GV Prakash) is a frustrated student who has a rather off-beat relationship with his family, and is close to his friend Nazir. As Kanal gets to know about a college seat-selling process that takes place around him, he finds his way into the racket and begins to taste money. However, all is not well and troubles come in different shapes and sizes as he runs into Ravi Varma (Gautham Menon), the head of the gang.
Selfie has a good bunch of characters to get across its point, but the fresh backdrop that the film has slowly starts to drain out on energy. After a slightly messy first twenty minutes, the film starts to pick up steam and moves well until the interval. But the second half, despite being focused, has some dry parts in the middle until finally opting for a well-written and executed final stretch.
GV Prakash does well in the role of Kanal, and it is another good performance from the actor in the commercial space. The actor understands that the film has a narrative that needs to give space to the others around him, and packs in a good show.
Varsha Bollamma offers fine support in the first half. Gautham Menon does not have the best of roles, but there is a decent amount of screen space for him in the film. There’s also DG Gunanidhi (also the producer of the film) who is pretty impressive in the first half, where he has a good role to play.
GV Prakash’s music is powerful and there are a lot of stylish themes in the film that help it bring up the momentum. The other technicalities of the film are functional.
On the whole, Selfie is a fine effort at bringing about an engaging tale. The film does not break big barriers but works as a neat crime drama. Selfie Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas
