An undemanding mass entertainer which could've soared higher
Rekka turns out as a decent outing for Vijay Sethupathi, who is having a dream run this year. He is effortless in his portrayal of Siva, a young man who is a savior for lovers looking to unite. Overall, Rathina Siva has the pulse for mass entertainers. He knows to spice up his film with punch lines and impact scenes but the packaging could have been better.

Vijay Sethupathi teams up with director Rathina Siva for Rekka, a quintessential mass entertainer with mean baddies, family sentiments and an all-conquering hero. It is the kind of undemanding film which won’t leave you complaining.
But the film (running for around 140 mins) could have soared higher, if not for the needless songs which hamper the flow of the film. The stunt choreography could have been reasonable too. Beyond a point, it becomes monotonous seeing villains fly all over the place and VJS hardly break a sweat.
Even then, Rekka turns out as a decent outing for Vijay Sethupathi, who is having a dream run this year. He is effortless in his portrayal of Siva, a young man who is a savior for lovers looking to unite. He has his own reasons to take up such a risky task, which we get to know in a flashback segment, later in the film. Siva antagonizes David (Harish Uthaman) during one such endeavor. David has his own personal score to settle with another villain and he drags Siva into this play. The film ends with the hero confronting both these villains.
Rekka has fine character roles for the likes of Sija Rose, KS Ravikumar, Kishore and the small boy from Sethupathi. Sathish’s lines bring out a few chuckles as expected, while KSR and VJS share good banter as the father – son duo. Sija Rose stands tall with a moving portrayal and the sister sentiment factor is a plus in Rekka.
Composer D.Imman delivers the necessary punch in the re-recording, which is on the louder side and suits the mood of the film. Among his songs, the emotional ‘Kannamma’ is a highlight during the flashback segment in the 2nd half.
Lakshmi Menon’s romance track is dumb, to put it mildly. The young lady looks a few shades fairer and also gets nice costumes. But her dream songs are definite loo breaks for the audience.
Cameraman Dinesh Krishnan is a VJS regular and he elevates the screen presence of his hero here. Most of the action happens in live locations and Rekka has good scale.
One has to admit that director Rathina Siva has the pulse for mass entertainers. He knows to spice up his film with punch lines and impact scenes but the packaging could have been better.
