Though there is a lot of films based on endless number of social themes, there’s only a handful of films which are based on death penalty in a democratic country like India. And, only very few (like Kamal Haasan’s Virumaaandi) tread the line carefully and make an impact with audiences. SP Jananthan’s upcoming film ‘Purampokku’ jointly produced by his home banner Binary Pictures and UTV Motion Pictures, questions the relevance of death penalty in a democratic society.
Purompokku also focuses on the plight of prisoners inside jail. “The uneducated and underprivileged form the largest chunk of people who fill up jails. How will they have means to fight their case? Also, when I did my research, I was surprised to find that there were no proper official records of those sent to the gallows so far. So, who knows how many have been put to death in India? These were the some of the issues that nudged me to write this film,” explains Jananathan in an interview to a daily. Arya, Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam and Karthika Nair are coming face-to-face for the first time in the prison sequences that are being shot now.
