Prolific writer Jayakanthan passes away

Prolific writer, critic and filmmaker Jayakanthan passed away last night after suffering from a prolonged illness for the past few months. He was a recipient of both Jnanpith and Sahitya Akatemi awards. Jayakanthan was one of the few writers who questioned the ideologies of Dravidian parties in his heydays. His film Unnaipol Oruvan won the Best Feature Film award at the 12th National awards.

Also, popular Islamic singer Nagoor Hanifa passed away at his residence yesterday. He was known for crooning songs at the DMK meetings and conferences. He was a close companion to CN Annadurai and Kalaignar M Karunanidhi.
