A pleasing, rewarding family entertainer!
Pandiraj proved himself with a massive blockbuster in Kadaikutty Singam, which proved that relatable family dramas are not just fit for the small screen but can be made in a way that it is wholesomely enjoyable on the big screen as well. Being asked to repeat the success is a challenge that many have failed at, but the director comes back with the winning hat in Namma Veetu Pillai aka NVP, a fully engaging family drama that ticks all the boxes of an entertainer. With strong emotions, good comedy, great music and a wonderful ensemble cast, the film couldn’t have been better in many ways.
Sivakarthikeyan and Aishwarya Rajesh come in as Arumpon and Thulasi, sharing a brother-sister relationship that is easy to send love to. The film slowly introduces us to its world of characters through Bharathiraja, who plays the eldest man in the family. From there on, Pandiraj entangles his characters in a fresh and gushing narrative that does not leave many loose ends. The first half largely caters to the brother-sister angle and the importance of marriage, while the second half pulls in all the characters and gives them something good to do. The film takes an unexpected turn in the final stretch, adding more drama to the proceedings, closing in on a superb note. This is where Pandiraj takes extra care in keeping the melodrama in check, without making it too much of a cry bath.
Despite the presence of many characters, the entire film is dependent upon the five characters played by Sivakarthikeyan, Aishwarya Rajesh, Bharathiraja, Natty, and Soori (with a special mention to his hilarious son).
All of these five fit the bill perfectly and give the film their best shot, right from start to finish. Apart from these artists, Pandiraj also makes it a point to assemble a very good supporting star cast with names such as Subbu Panchu, Vela Ramamoorthy, Aadukalam Naren and others who help the flow very nicely. Overall, it is the casting that makes the film more relatable, and credit goes to Pandiraj for narrating it without any confusions.
Imman’s music is another strong pillar for the film, be it the songs or the background score. There is a lot to like in his songs, which are thankfully good breaks from the emotional struggle that the film loads on us. Nirav Shah’s cinematography provides the film with what it needs, staying functional to the requirements.
On the whole, Namma Veetu Pillai aka NVP is a clean and green family entertainer that strikes the right chords and finds its way to the heart. It is definitely not easy to create a film of this sort, and thankfully, Pandiraj gets it right, two times in a row. Namma Veetu Pillai Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas
