My Dear Bootham Movie Review

Kid-friendly films have now become a once-in-a-year occurrence in Tamil cinema. With Teddy last year, this year’s entrant seems to be My Dear Bootham, which will take the kids back to the times of My Dear Kutty Chaathan and Jee Boom Baa.

Director Navin, after making two variant films first up in Manjapai and Kadamban, has now turned to do this film for children. He introduces us to Tirunavakarasu (Ashwath), a kid who suffers from stammering issues and is troubled by the way in which he is trolled by his so called friends, a teacher and the surroundings. In comes Karkimuki (Prabhudeva), a genie who is let loose by the kid, and helps turn around the things in his life. My Dear Bootham’s storyline is straight out of the numerous tales we have seen as a kid, as there is nothing special to add to the film. Yet, the performance of both Prabhu Deva and Ashwath turn out to be superb, and that keeps us engaged to the film.

Prabhu Deva’s numerous costume changeovers, funny histrionics and other things may turn out to be fun to watch for the kids, but the same cannot be said about the parents who bring the kids to theatres. The film could have minimized its aims a little bit for the bigger picture, as there is a lot of scope to put across much-needed messages, which the director misses out on.

There are a couple of good moments in the film’s runtime, but the others are mostly marred by kiddish events. Credit must go however to both Prabhu Deva and Ashwath who have put their best foot forward to make this film worthwhile.

Imman’s music is neat, while the same can be said about the technicalities which are functional but not bad. And yes, it looks like it has been a conscious decision from the team to get across the VFX work in an old-fashioned style, it works out well for them.

On the whole, My Dear Bootham is a watchable film for adults and they could enjoy it more if they balance their film viewing experience with the reactions of their kids, who are sure to love this film.  My Dear Bootham Movie Review by Only Kollywood
