An adequately engaging action drama!

After a very sobre debut in Rangoli, director Vaali Mohan Das is back with his second outing in the form of Madraskaaran, a raw and rustic action drama that puts many characters in difficult situations and lets us watch all the episodes.

The film begins very lazily with two song sequences and a bland love track, but it immediately picks up pace when it puts the focus on an accident bringing together the film’s main characters. This particular scene kicks off a set of dominos which turn back to back tense moments onto the scene and that’s how many more characters get introduced into the film. Madraskaaran makes use of elements such as ego clashes, familial politics, caste, greed and other things to make its screenplay interesting, and the snake and ladder game between its characters is what the film is all about.

The first half of the film is decently built after the first 30 odd minutes, and closes it with an emotional interval block. The second half has so much space to pull on, and though it is elongated, it is engaging in parts. However, the closure of the film may not be the best bet for it, and it is debatable for sure.

Shane Nigam brings about a good performance playing the lead role in a Tamil film for the first time, and though his dubbing is a misfire, it works well otherwise. The film benefits from the presence of Kalaiarasan who is a good fit. The rest of the cast are adequate.

The film has good visuals and the stunts by Dinesh Subbarayan are impressive, but the film surely deserved better songs and BGM from Sam CS, who makes it too loud at places.

On the whole, Madraskaaran is a watchable action drama that will impress fans of the genre. Director Vaali Mohan Das’ play with the emotions works well.

Madraskaaran Movie Rating: 3/5
