Kodi Parakkura Kaalam: Singers – Kalpana Raghavendhar, Rakshita Suresh, Deepthi Suresh, Aparna Harikumar 👍
What a banger from AR Rahman. Starts off with a cry, moves onto an energetic beat and ends with a big high. The variations, choice of singers and the arrangements are all on point, and Rahman has a fantastic first interlude to accompany it with. This one is going to be a scorcher onscreen for sure.
Nenjame Nenjame: Singers – Vijay Yesudas, Shaktisree Gopalan
A lilting melody that never gets into loud quarters, and maintains its soft and hug-like mood throughout. Some meaningful lyrics by Yugabharathi here, and what makes it likeable is the chorus portion which also beautifully organized.
Uchanthala: Singers – Deepthi Suresh, Sireesha Bhagavathula, Pavithra Chari
A neat song that has minimalistic orchestrations, and is more about the feeling that needs to be slided across. The grand chorus in the second half of the song is something special, and sounds absolutely perfect.
Manna Maamanna: Singers – Arivu 👍
Give it up to Arivu for fully taking over this track with respect to the lyrics and vocals. The ‘Osai Osai’ high point is terrific, and there are lots of interesting lines that make it a great revolutionary number. And yes, it does get better with repeated listens.
Veerane: Singer – AR Ameen 👍
Energy is the word here, and the father-son duo of Rahman and Ameen combine to bring in a jolting number. Ameen handles the vocals so well in the high points, and the motivational zone that the song drives into is so good. If you’ve been looking for a head-banger after the Pathu Thala title track, go for this one.
Raasa Kannu: Singer – Vadivelu 👍
On first hear, this may sound like a pretty good tribute to Vadivelu’s songs that he has sung all over his life. But as we keep going back to it, the ARR slow poison takes over, and makes it a splendid track. Vadivelu’s ‘Thandana Thaana’ is unbeatable, unmissable.
Jigu Jigu Rail: Singer – AR Rahman 👍
If there’s one song that has to be the pick of the album, this is the one. Big claps to Rahman for having two sets of high points in the song – ‘Ey Lamba’ and ‘Ellaam Maarum’. There are so many lyrical bits that work wonders, and the chorus glides in spectacularly with Rahman’s flying rendition.
The Maamannan album is another solid offering from AR Rahman, who has once again proved why he is the best in the business with respect to his variations, arrangements and the sheer versatility across musical genres with this one album. Not all the songs work on the first hear, but they are sure to fly higher in the coming days. Maamannan Songs Review by Siddarth Srinivas
