Even though women-centric films are being a much-sought-out trend in Tamil cinema off late, the quality has been alternating between good and bad. This Friday, we have yet another release in the form of Kolamaavu Kokila – Nayanthara’s crime comedy which banks on the story of drug transportation. The film is a neatly conceived thriller that has its fair share of moments, spaced far in between.

Kolamaavu Kokila takes time to pick up speed, with the first 40 minutes of the film wandering without the story coming into play. Of course, there is Yogi Babu, his comic timing and the Kalyaana Vayasu number which come to shift the entertainment gears up. It is only after the drug angle is completely brought in that the film soars, thanks to the interesting situations that have been presented. However, one cannot go without saying that payoffs do not match up to the level of the build-ups in the film.

Nayanthara comes up with a terrific, understated performance in Kolamaavu Kokila. It’s not easy to act when you have only a handful of expressions that you can use, and the actress doing it fine shows her prowess. Playing a timid girl who’s always afraid of the situations, it’s another feather on her cap. On the other hand, it’s Yogi Babu who ensures that he leaves you in splits whenever he’s on screen. The comic elements in the film are the factor that help you sit through, even though the entire star cast do their best to contribute.

CoCo is blessed with great cinematography and coloring, maintaining a singular mood throughout. Anirudh’s music is absolutely fantastic and gets us connected to the film easily, specifically the way in which he uses his tunes to elevate the scene.

At an aerial view, Kolamaavu Kokila comes off as a decent crime comedy with Nayanthara’s performance and Anirudh’s music being the heroes, making it work despite the slow pace. If you’re a fan of dark comedies, you’re bound to like this one more.
