Kochadaiiyaan gets tax exemption finally
The Madras High Court has passed the interim order yesterday and instructed exhibitors to not collect any tax from the general public for Kochadaiiyaan. A vacation bench of Justices M M Sundresh and R Mahadevan passed an interim order on a public interest writ petition from advocate S Muthaiah of Ernavur. Passing the order, the Madras HC quashed the petition and held the tax exemption is still valid.
The entertainment tax is 15% of the gross collection for a newly released film and 10% of the gross collection for a old film as per the Tamil Nadu Entertainment Tax Act 1939. TN government has been providing tax exemption to films which has Tamil titles and promote Tamil tradition, language and culture among other obscure norms and regulations. Recently, two Tamil films including Yennamo Yedho and Tenaliraman were denied tax exemption and advocate S Muthaiah contended that Kochadaiiyaan should also be denied tax benfefit, but thanks to Madras HC, the decision has left the fans happy considering the exorbitant ticket rates for a Rajinikanth film.
