Director Sarath seems to be heavily inspired from Kamal Haasan’s Social Drama “Unnai Pol Oruvan”, in which he had worked as an associate director. Taking up that inspiration in a right way, he penned the script which could work in all segments like Love, Comedy, Action, Sentiment and a social message at the end.
The movie kick starts with the kidnapping of the Chief Minster (Prakash Raj), where a news reader cues viewers that he was elected by the people after Siragugal party was outsted from the office – this is the only statement where the movie connects with its earlier version Ko 2. And yes, the kidnap plan is executed by an angry journalist/common man who is striving for a better change in the country, Bobby Simhaa. The first half moves on with police’s enquiry with Bala Saravanan, who also turns out to be Simhaa’s short time friend and was present with the CM during the kidnap.
Bala Saravanan essays a flashback to let the police officials know about his relationship with Simha. Then comes Nikki Galrani, who is seen as a love interest for both Simhaa and Bala Saravanan. The movie shifts back to the flashback and presents few interactions between Simhaa, Prakash Raj & the officials in the first half with a predictable twist at the interval with a hope that second half pulls it back.
Thanks to Sarath’s engaging writing in the 2nd half which hooks the audience with some good twists and turns which come across as completely unexpected. Karunakaran comes just for three scenes in the 2nd half, but the actor has done his job very well by making an emotional connect with the audience. Dialogues for Bobby Simhaa are razor sharp, to mention few are the ones on Govt Jobs, Medicine Prices, Fake Notes etc. Leon James deserves a special mention for his music as well.
What will work for Ko2 is undoubtedly its 2nd half and the release time. With TN Elections 2016 just two days away, the movie might turn as an eye opener for voters, who are all set to ink their fingers to elect the new Chief Minister of the state.
