Kaththi beats Endhiran day 1 collection in Tamil Nadu!
Vijay’s Kaththi has surpassed Shankar’s Endhiran’s Day 1 collections in Tamil Nadu with a net of 12.5 crores approximately from 455 screens. While the comparison between two films has its own merits and demerits, we explain you the crucial differences. Kaththi released on one of the widely celebrated festivals down south but Endhiran, which netted 11 crores approximately, was released on a non-festival day. The expectations for Endhiran was phenomenally huge courtesy Rajinikanth – Shankar’s previous blockbuster Sivaji and Aishwarya Rai come back to Tamil cinema.
Endhiran released four years ago and it was a solo release in nearly 600 screens all over Tamil Nadu whereas Kaththi had a competent opposition in Vishal’s Poojai which got released in 300 plus screens across TN. The ticket prices could not be an issue, both Endhiran and Kaththi were sold at exorbitant prices on day 1 with only minor differences. The promotions by Sun Pictures were one of a kind for Endhiran but promotions for Kaththi were mostly low-key and executed only towards the fag end of the release date. Don’t forget that even the trailer for Kaththi was released only two days before the release. But, the protests of fringe groups and the vast media coverage of the same just in time before the release, one should say, somehow helped pique the curiosity of the general populace. So, after weighing all permutations combinations, Kaththi’s day 1 record is a commendable achievement indeed.
With this healthy trend and more biggies in the offing, we could foresee more of these figures in the near future.
Day 1 Box-office figures of Kaththi (approximate)
Tamil Nadu – 12.5 crores net
Kerala – 1.75 crores net
Karnataka – 1.5 crores net
Rest of India – 25 lakhs net
So, the all-India box-office collection for Kaththi stands at 16 crores net.
