It’s not easy to pinpoint a director who can work out his comic entertainers at a level better than Sundar C. With sublime control over his ensemble cast, dialogues and the hilarious situations, he’s so good when it comes to keeping the audiences in splits and bringing about the entertainment factor. In his latest offering Kalakalappu:2, we have all the above factors in the right proportions, resulting in a complete stress buster.
Sundar C’s ability to keep the momentum flowing in his comic strides is a skill of his own, and the fact that he has canned this film under the space of just 3 months is an achievement in itself. Even with a plethora of central actors and comedians, the space for each of them is not lost in the translation between the script to the screen. There are hugely likable links in the screenplay that nicely slot out the role for each character to play, and it all gets in place like clockwork. It’s worth pondering over how Sundar C is able to infuse comedy everywhere, be it the songs or the fights, and still not overdo the same.
I would not say that I am a complete fan of the director’s ideologies. For starters, I didn’t quite like his horror try-outs in the Aranmanai serie or the sleaze that he likes to push in (here too!). But one has to admit that having a script in place in a comic film at these times is an appreciable fact, as the definition of the whole genre is trying to be facelifted with literally mindless skits.
Jiiva and Jai piggyback on the host of comedians led by Yogi Babu, Sathish, Robo Shankar and the rest, but the show stealer amongst them all is Mirchi Shiva, who does not need anything more than his vocal modulations and dialogue delivery to tickle your funny bone. In short, he is the centrifugal force of Kalakalappu:2, upping the ante of the film as soon as he comes on.
With just enough technical value and a peppy score from Hip Hop Tamizha, Kalakalappu:2 works out as a hilarious entertainer that will help you relieve your week’s tension. Even at a length of close to 3 hours, you won’t feel the bite if you’re game for such a brand of comedy. Sundar C once again proves that he is the king of comic entertainers, and we are always ready for more of such films from the director.
