IRIR is a partly impressive romance drama that starts off in fun fashion and then delves into an abusive, troublesome relationship. It is a film that will interest fans of intense romance dramas and the love birds. There are a lot of positives, but the big picture is just about par.

Ranjit Jeyakodi’s Ispade Rajavum Idhaya Raaniyum kicks off with the love Sandaali number, and the following 50 minutes that follow in the first half are a great set of fun moments. The director nicely establishes the characters and their line of sight, putting in quirky situations that help you judge the people in the film and connect with them. There is a lot to like in this narration which does not take the usual path in spoon-feeding the audience, but just lets it grow onto them through the narration. At the halfway mark, things are set for a second half which could have gone the right way, but doesn’t quite hit the target.
Director Ranjit Jeyakodi’s first film in Puriyaadha Pudhir had a nice setup which created the mystery quotient in an interesting way, only to break the flow with repetitive sequences that did not sync with the actual intent of the film. In his sophomore outing too, the director repeats the same mistake by having too much of the same thing in the second half. Once the plot is established, it becomes incredibly easy to predict what’s coming, including the dialogues which turn cheesy. The film ultimately turns into a bare affair with its intent best known to itself alone.
However, a fair share of positives do exist here, making it a watchable outing on the whole. The first of them all would be Harish Kalyan, who totally impresses with his ability to pull off a raging, loud and fiery character with confidence. His performance is the biggest plus point of the film, and he is truly ready for the big stage as a hero. Debut cinematographer Kavin Raj’s work is another advantage, as he brings in solid camera angles and shot composition. This is also one of Sam CS’ better works in recent times, he is in fine form with both the songs and the background score. Heroine Shilpa Manjunath has an adequate performance to flaunt, but her pairing with Harish seems slightly off track.
