Ilaiyaraja talks about the classical dance production ‘Swappnam’
We earlier reported here that Ilaiyaraja has composed music for a classical dance production called Swappnam. Ilaiyaraja has explored classical Carnatic ragas, voice symphonies and violin symphonies for his dance production. While it is planned to be staged in a week, the team is releasing Raja’s compositions as a music album featuring 10 songs.
Swappnam DANCE THEATRE DREAMS is a grand operatic musical conceived and scripted by Krithika Subrahmanian. It is Isaignani Ilayaraaja’s first ever full length musical composition for Classical dance production.
Senior vocalists such as T V Gopalakrishnan, Sudha Raghunathan, Sharreth, Rajashree Pathak, and young talents such as Abhishek Raghuram, Bharat Sundar, Vasudha Ravi, Poornima Sathish have given voice to Isaignanis meticulously arranged notes in flourishing voice symphonies, ballads, soulful padams and powerful operatic overtures.
Instrumentalists of great virtuosity such as A K Palanivel, Embar Kannan, Rajhesh Vaidya, Palghat Sreeram and Kaarthik Raja have added layers of melody in outstanding orchestration to match Isaignani’s vision.
The lead dancers and choreographers Krithika Subrahmanian and Vaibhav Arekar have handpicked
competent Classical Dancers of dynamism and charisma from all over India to perform Swappnam.
The scale and grandeur of Swappnam will be a unique first time experience for audiences.

“This is the first time I have worked on a project of this nature. ‘Swappnam’ – the title is so vast. It encompasses all emotions – that of children, the aged, romance, the aspirations, everything. Thiruvembavai, Thevaram, Shiva Leela conceived like the Raas Leela, Shivoham, Eppo Varuvaro and all the pieces are very close to my heart.
I am eagerly looking forward to the dance visualization as we discussed a lot about it during the recording.
Beyond my music, I have nothing to tell. While youngsters choose their own path, they must not differentiate between achievement and discipline. They must understand that there is no success without sacrifice and no achievement without discipline. Achievement should not go into their head. Satisfaction is the most important factor. If one is satisfied, there is no greater god to visualize. Discipline, Sacrifice and achievement of satisfaction are the greatest successes for a person. My music in this will inspire many. The hearing of my music will leave you all satisfied. Swappnam will definitely make an impact.“
