When speculations arose about Shankar’s next project after Endhiran, fans of Tamil cinema were excited to see what the maverick director had to offer. ‘I’ happened, with a powerhouse of talent coming together. After getting through three years of exhaustive making and a rather confusing release schedule, the team is just a day away from giving us their product which just might be the most sought out Tamil movie of the year.

For starters, Shankar came up with I’s storyline around 15 years ago. After narrating it to a lot of stalwarts ranging from the Superstar to AR Rahman, Shankar finally announced I with Vikram playing the lead. Little did we know that the actor had to go through a makeover of his lifetime for the role.

Vikram’s dedication to ‘I’ is something that will be talked about for the years to come. Rising his weight upto triple figures, and bringing it down to just 45 is no easy joke. Vikram took up intense training with two specialist trainers, a physiotherapist and a strict diet. While he upped the beefcake for his role as the bodybuilder, he had to thin down to a stick figure in order to accommodate the heavy makeup for the Koonan role. Sources did add up saying that he has also taken an insurance to avoid health issues due to the give-it-all level training.

Sometimes I used to have just half an apple in two hours and a small piece of egg with very little rice. I would go mad with hunger after 10 in the night. It was a very difficult phase” – Vikram

Looking into the rest of the cast, and I is pretty strong there too. With ‘Amazing Amy Jackson’ essaying the female lead and an interesting supporting palette with the likes of Upen Patel, Ramkumar and Suresh Gopi who plays the deadly villain, ‘I’ will definitely come with some power packed performances.

“We have shot for this film for more than two years, but it has been worth a lifetime for me. I have enjoyed every moment of it” – Amy Jackson

The technical team of ‘I’ is one which is brimming with talent and expertise. PC Sreeram’s visuals in the teasers and trailer have already blown minds apart. The complete film onscreen promises to be ten times bigger with enough stock to make your jaw drop. Though the film has a lengthy runtime of over three hours, editor Anthony’s cuts will surely aid Shankar’s screenplay which invariably moves at a brisk pace. AR Rahman’s music is already topping the charts and is expected to click even bigger with the colorful music videos. One thing that will surely shoot ‘I’ up above the rest is the visuals, which will be like no other.

‘I’ has four amazingly choreographed fights, one of them done by the fight master of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Shankar had been holding back ‘I’ for a long time, thanks to a plethora of issues. The project finally took off and has now reached the stage from where the audience take it on. Though he has confessed that ‘I’ will be different from his earlier works, he promised that the film will be a completely entertaining thriller with his trademark touches. Here’s a director who has never disappointed, and the same will continue with ‘I’, in all probability.

A preview of a film is supposed to tell you what to expect from the film. But in this film’s case, the answer is everything. ‘I’ will come with action, comedy, suspense and entertainment with a romantic bottomline. There is no doubt over the gargantuan expectations for this magnum opus, and the mercury is just about to hit the zenith right now.

I cannot wait for I. Can you?
