Sundar C is consistently proving himself as a minimum guarantee director. With Aranmanai 4 and Madha Gaja Raja (despite the delayed release) turning out to be hits, he lands his next venture in the form of Gangers – a fun Tamil version in the ‘Money Heist’ zone.

Sundar C sticks to the basics when it comes to his storyline, as he adds the revenge factor which is a done-to-death writing trope. In Gangers, he picks up an entire first half to post some action sequences and minimalistic comedy, following the usual route. It is only in the second half that the film shifts to full throttle, with the heist element coming in superbly and helping the film so well. Once the entire group is assembled and the heist element is set in motion, there’s no stopping Gangers from becoming a fun laughter riot, with consistent comedy and entertaining stretches that bring the roof down. As expected, the climax stretch of the film is super entertaining with Vadivelu’s histroinics adding to the suspense element that the director keeps bringing in, and helps the film on its way until the end.

The OG combo of Sundar C and Vadivelu who have entertained audiences for decades know exactly what the audiences want from them, and though the film takes time to entirely deliver, it gives you what you want before you step out of the theatre.

After a long time, Vadivelu gets a good comeback in the comic role, and the supporting cast with Bucks and Muniskanth leading the pack do a good job as well.

Gangers is technically functional with good camerawork and decent music, and if the film had a little better contributions in these two departments, it would have worked even better.

On the whole, this is a film that you can sit back and enjoy with a bucket of popcorn. I believe Sundar C has plans to turn it into a franchise, and I am sure many of us including me wouldn’t mind that coming through.

Gangers Movie Rating: 3.25/5
