Vadivelu’s Eli is an appallingly spiritless film that is replete with cliched, run-of-the-mine comedy and stick-in-the-mud ideas. Yuvaraj Dayalan, who made a fine debut in Potta Potti and followed it with a lackluster Thenaliraman, has missed yet another opportunity to make use of Vadivelu’s risible screen presence.

Set in the period of 1960s Chennai, Eli revolves around cigarette smuggling. When cops find out that there is a mole within their group, they decide to send a spy to infiltrate the smuggling gang and unmask the mole. Except for barely few comical scenes, the entire film is such a yawn-fest. Vadivelu is the fulcrum around which the entire story is built and if he fails, where else can you seek solace in? His jokes appear outdated and evokes no laughter. His antics scarcely work and make you cringe. His body-language is the only enjoyable aspect in an otherwise drilling film.
