Director Manikandan’s Kaakaa Muttai, which premiered in Toronto International Film Festival last night opened to rave reviews from critics and moviegoers. Apparently, after the first screening, the crowd gave two-minute ovation for the film at the end. Jointly produced by Vetrimaaran’s Grass Root Film Company and Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, Kaakaa Muttai features a bunch of kids with supporting roles played by Babu Antony and Iyshwarya Rajesh of Attakathi and Rummy fame.
Vetrimaaran – Dhanush’s Aadukalam was one of the highly celebrated films in TIFF when it was screened at the festival few years back. Now, the duo have repeated the Toronto success again in 204. Kaakaa Muttai is also reviewed by the reputed weekly The Hollywood Reporter yesterday. “There’s a dark honesty to what’s being depicted that recalls Italian social comedies of the 1940’s and 50’s, making for a pizza that’s tastier than it seems, and ultimately bittersweet,” wrote Jordan Mintzer on THR.
