Devi 2 Movie Review

With little or no innovation, Devi 2 comes off as a sequel that the makers could have done away with. The film banks on the tropes of the first part and repeats the same thing here, trying to acquire success. What comes by is a mostly boring film that never manages to engage you for a five-minute straight stretch at least.

It’s pretty clear that Vijay needs to take a break and retrospect on the blunders that he has done in the recent past. For starters, the film doesn’t even have a decent plot and just decides to have two ghosts instead of one as it the second part of the franchise. Vijay builds the narrative with cliched, illogical scenes which come one after the other and test the patience of the audiences. While the first half is bearable thanks to the performances of the lead pair, the second half truly goes over the top and flies into a zone where it is tough to sit through. The whole film feels like something that has been shot leisurely while the cast and crew have enjoyed a vacation in Mauritius.

Prabhu Deva’s inclusion to the Devi series was interesting in the first part, because of his re-entrance to the acting scene. Here, his comics become tiring after a point as he tries too hard to impress. Tamannaah is the only good presence in the film, as her hyperactive actions bring in the laughs at many occasions. The rest of the cast are just fillers.

Devi 2 is further bobbed down by the shabby cinematography and the lifeless music. These are two points that won in the first part, but lost here. Toting up, Devi 2 joins the list of unwanted sequels in Tamil cinema. It is a film that tries hard to capitalize on the success of the first, and falls in the process.

Verdict: A casual, half-baked horror comedy
