Nelson Dilipkumar’s first two films in Kolamaavu Kokila and Doctor were entertaining films that came up with cool concepts too. The films were set in old territories with a dark comedy approach that made them feel fresh. When the same was expected in his third film Beast, the director delivers a mid-boiled product that does not fire on all cylinders.

Beast shows us the events that take place in Veera Raghavan’s life, a RAW agent who is a perfectionist in everything he touches. When Veera’s life takes a dark turn, his next chapter is packed with an even bigger turn where he has take on the problem as a one-man army. Beast’s first half is quite entertaining as it introduces us to the character of Veera Raghavan in an interesting manner and then takes us to the mall and produces some crackling moments which are smartly put across with proper fanboy moments. However, the second half is the weaker of the two and totally takes a toll on the logic which has to be present in the narrative. Nelson makes Vijay feel like a superhero fighting against humans, as everything falls into place at the command of the protagonist with no proper adversary or opposing force. This is Beast’s downlink, as even Nelson’s stronghold, which is the comedy, hardly maintains a clean graph throughout the film.

Beast is highlighted by the presence of Thalapathy Vijay and his epic styling, superb flow in the action sequences and the mass moments that come through. With the stunning cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa, the pulsating score by Anirudh and the stylish stunt choreography by Anbariv masters, the end result is a set of superb action sequences which are the best parts of the film.

Except for VTV Ganesh’s comics and Pooja Hegde’s fluency in the songs, there is hardly anything to cheer about in Nelson’s supporting cast, who were a scream in his previous two films.

On the whole, Beast turns out to be a fair flesh mass action entertainer that will serve as good fun for the fans. But Nelson’s strength lies in his comedy, and that goes missing here. The film ultimately works out as a decent entertainer that rides on Vijay’s star power and comfortability playing such a role.  Beast Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas
