The story of Bala’s Thaarai Thappattai revealed!
Director Bala, like Maniratnam and Shankar, is one of the few filmmakers in Tamil cinema who considers his script as a treasure trove. Thaarai Thappattai starring M. Sasikumar has always been in the news ever since the title was made official. Be it deciding the opening scene of the film to be shot in a crematorium in Pithamagan, or the trenchant portrayal of the exploitation of beggars in Naan Kadavul, Bala has always been a familiar comrade for inviting controversies.
Thaaarai Thappattai is a film based on Karagaattam, the traditional dance form of Tamils. Varalaxmi Sarathukumar, a professionally trained dancer plays the female lead of the film. As per sources, Sasikumar hails from a Brahmin family in the film and his parents wish him to learn Mridangam. But, Bala wouldn’t love that. Sasikumar is passionate towards learning Thavil, which is considered a substandard in brahminical society. Sasikumar abandons his parents to pursue his passion. This forms the crux of the plot in Thaarai Thappattai, we hear.
