Spirited Village!

Appuchi Graamam is a small film but made with a lot of heart and it, definitely, has its moments. It is quite satisfying as a village drama with a tinge of sci-fi element weaved into the storyline convincingly.

Appuchi Graamam, with its limited scope for entertainment, is quite satisfying as a village drama with a tinge of sci-fi element weaved into the storyline convincingly. Debutant director Vi Anand uses humor as the central theme of the film which totally works in its favor.

A meteor is about to fall from the sky. The government announces that it could be anywhere in Tamil Nadu. The film focusses on the struggle for survival in Appuchi Graamam where people, after getting to know that their days are counted, panick and come to terms with life, let go of their enmity with their neighbors and renew their lost relationships. How the villagers attitude towards life undergoes a change in their last few days on earth is what Appuchi Graamam is all about.

The film has good performances though a majority of them are newcomers. Seasoned actors like Kanja Karuppu, Nassar, Singam Puli have done justice to their roles in their minimum screen presence.

The VFX work in the film is convincingly done. In fact, for its limited budget, it’s quite amazing. The cinematography by GK Prasad captures the beauty of the village superbly. However, it is Vishal Chandrasekhar’s music which shoulders the film in its crucial junctures, especially during the last half an hour. The film’s running time at less than two hours is the biggest advantage of the genre. It helps us to overlook the drags and appreciate the proceedings, even if they are a little flawed.

Director Vi Anand has come up with a successful attempt to narrate a village drama with a sci-fi element in the backdrop. Appuchi Graamam is a small film but made with a lot of heart and it, definitely, has its moments.
