Kamal Haasan’s Drishyam remake mired in legal trouble

The Tamil remake of Drishyam, titled Papanasam, is facing legal trouble in Kerala in a district court. Last month, a writer named Sathish Paul had filed copyright infringement suit on the film saying it had more similarities to his script Oru Mazhakalathu which he had registered in 2009. After watching the film and reading the script, the court has ordered to stall the remake unless a bank guarantee of Rs. 10 lakh has been paid as compensation before the final judgement arrives.

“We have moved the case to the High Court. We have enough evidences on our side to prove that the film is not a copy. The actual case proceedings haven’t begun yet. We will counter the allegations. Regarding the similarities, I would ask anyone with doubts to read that script and see for themselves. There are two murders in it and many other differences. But both are crime thrillers, and just as all triangular love stories will have the same basics, these too have some similarities,” says director Jeethu Joseph to a daily.

The film is eagerly awaited since Gowthami and Kamal Haasan are coming together on screen after a long time.
