Sundar C’s films are minimum guarantee entertainers. Over the years, the director has hardly lost his mojo and he has just delivered a 100 crore blockbuster last summer. But with this Pongal’s surprise entry in the form of Madha Gaja Raja, the director has proved that he doesn’t need to make a film in today’s times, he can even release a film which is 12 years old and still make it work.
Yes, Madha Gaja Raja is dated and feels a bit like an old film. Yes, there are double entendres and dialogues which hit slightly below the belt. Yes, there is an overuse of glamour which leads into the sleazy area. Yes, there are silly scenes sans any logic. But, what matters is that the comedy in the film works, and that it is entertaining. Despite being a film that is a decade old, it manages to chuckle you up as Santhanam, Vishal and the rest of the cast keep coming up with hilarious situations and scenes one after the other.
The first half of the film is predominantly set around a group of friends and a wedding, while the second half moves into more of a mass entertainer where a villain is brought in. However, there isn’t much of a bore or a stale feeling to the film, and that’s where Madha Gaja Raja works out so well.
To say particularly, there is a 20 minute sequence between Vishal, Santhanam and the late actor Manobala which totally brings the roof down, audiences are going to laugh their hearts out in theatres.
If you want to get nitpicky about the film, it is very easy as the fights feel dated, the BGM blares at places and there are humps everywhere. However, on the whole, Madha Gaja Raja is a film that keeps you entertained and keeps the ball rolling until the end. If you have been missing the mindless entertainers of the 2010s, here we are with your most prized possession.
