Mark Antony Movie Review

Adhik Ravichandran is a director who hardly impressed with his first few films and had more flops than wins in his career. However, after so many years the director gets to do the film he actually wanted to make from the start and delivers big time with a proper entertainer.

Mark Antony is a time travel entertainer that starts off with Mark (Vishal) playing the role of a mechanic, who is very close to a gangster Jackie Pandian (SJ Suryah) who takes very good care of him. Mark is good friends with Madhan Pandiyan (SJ Suryah again), Jackie’s son but hates his late father Antony (Vishal again) for the things that he has done wrongly including the heartless killing of his mother. Mark then comes across a magic phone, which helps him talk to people from the past, and that starts off a ring of interesting incidents one after the other, that even bring the dead men back to life.

Adhik Ravichandran throws up a big surprise as he showcases the writing skills and the clarity that was missing in all his films so far – he clearly sets up the stage for the film and never loses out on the clarity even though his snake-and-ladder structure is complicated with many loops, deaths and rebirths.

The film has some average bits in the beginning, but as it moves forward, it picks up pace very well and from the interval point onwards – it is a riot. The consistency in the comedy and the action in the film is really laudable, and Adhik makes sure there aren’t many rough edges for the film throughout.

This is Vishal’s most satisfying film since Irumbuthirai in 2018, and its finally good to see him get the scope to perform in not just an action packed role but also something that has good variance and emotion around it. But the real show stealer is definitely SJ Suryah who takes the film ten times above its worth again – he comes up with a wild and energetic performance that rules the roost with comic timing and the sheer unique way in which he acts out his part. The film is owned by him totally. There are a good bunch of artists such as Sunil, Ritu Varma, Abinaya, Nizhalgal Ravi, Selvaraghavan and others who contribute well to the film.

GV Prakash’s songs and BGM are big plus points to the film with the real cheers going to the use of old songs at important junctions of the film. The cinematography and editing are very neat, making Mark Antony a technically winsome product on the whole.

Mark Antony does have one or two dull moments in its stream but that’s negligible given the fact that Adhik Ravichandran has indeed delivered to something other than his target audience for the first time.
