Seenu Ramasamy’s films are ones which always get to the emotional base of a human’s journey, and he is someone who has done it for years together. In his latest film Maamanithan, the director gets to a story of a father who struggles to make ends meet, and keep his family going forward.

Vijay Sethupathi plays Radhakrishnan, an auto driver who is honest to the core, and will not budge to help anybody across the village. Radhakrishnan has bought himself a new house, but will not go in until he finds himself a wife who has studied more than him. He finally runs into Savitri (Gayathrie) family and marries her, only to fall into trouble as he blindly believes a man who lures him into his business. Radhakrishnan’s life is then turned on its head, as he has to go ahead with lots of problems in his personal life, and still has to support his family and educate his two kids, which is his biggest lifetime aim.

The film on the whole is a story of redemption, and how one man can go the long lengths to make his family not struggle in life. The storyline on the whole is very simple and straightforward, and Seenu Ramasamy sticks to the basics in terms of his narration as well. There is a lot to like in the way in which he keeps things at their baseline, and allows the audience to get to the undercurrent of the story and feel for Vijay Sethupathi’s character. However, the pacing of the film is very slow, and that acts as a backtracker for the film on the whole.

Vijay Sethupathi delivers another earnest performance in the lead role, and it has been long since he has been this level of likeable in the film. The film has a lot of solid scenes for the actor and he has done extremely well in them.

Supporting him ably is Gayathrie who has a strong role to play and is something that not everybody will do. Guru Somasundaram is the other actor who has given in a great performance in this film, and its good to see him don a matured role after a gap.

The cinematography and the editing works of the film are decent while the music works to an extent.

On the whole, Maamanithan is a fine family drama that gets many things right while narrating its story in a long and patient fashion. The performances keep you pinned and work out for the movie.  Maamanithan Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas
