Films on education are a rarity, because studying in itself turns out to be a boring affair for the students who walk into theatres in huge numbers. But debutant director Rajasekar makes a mark through the new film in Kamali from Nadukkaveri, which tells us the inspiring story of a girl from the rural hinterlands who goes the long hop to succeed at an IIT institution.
The film is built on its own pace with a lot of detailing on the entire IIT process and how things are done. The story of Kamali gets inspired to study in such an institution and the labour of love that she has to go through for the same is documented in a laid-back yet interesting pattern by Rajasekar, who takes his time to build the emotions of her character and drive her graph. There’s also a nice travel line for the supporting characters, who come in and out of Kamali’s life in many ways, both good and bad. Rajasekar’s first half has some lags in it, but the second half is neatly put together except for the slightly long drawn out climax which could have been a little shorter.
This is arguably Anandhi’s best performance till date, as the actress pulls of the bubbly role of the young student who later transforms into a mature and dedicated individual.
The film complements her abilities well and pushes up many places for her to take part and perform to the best levels, and she grabs it with both hands. Prathap Pothen’s act does seem a bit awkward at times, but he manages it differently, just like the rest of the cast who do their parts well. A special mention to Rohit Saraf, who has a handsome outlook and attitude, fitting into the film superbly.
Dheena Dayalan’s music is smartly done without overshadowing the emotional capability of the film. His two songs in the second half have a major impact and aid the flow of the proceedings, along with the visuals and the editing which are neatly arranged. The film could have been 15 minutes shorter though.
On the whole, Kamali from Nadukkaveri is a fresh and engaging film that throws the spotlight on the educational scene and stresses on the right notes. It is very rare that we get to see a film without needless commercial compromises, crass comedy, action and still manage to succeed with its intent. Credit to Rajasekar Duraisamy and the team for pulling off this small wonder. Kamali from Nadukkaveri Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas
