After numerous delays, Vignarajan’s debut in Andhaghaaram finally breaks out of its cocoon, and is no less than a unique, exciting supernatural thriller that has enough in it to make us forget about its long runtime.
The film smacks in the story of three individuals who cross paths in life – a cricketer, a librarian and a psychiatrist. Anything more on the storyline will lead to spoilers as Vignarajan meticulously puts together a sublime storyline and a plot that keeps thickening as the clock ticks. There’s enough and more complexity that the director is able to bring to this tale, and he does take his own time to feed in the details. However, the film finds its foot right before the halfway mark, and gets going in superb fashion until the end. Though there are small humps here and there, it is not a film that runs out of steam.
It is Arjun Das who makes a staggering impression once again, contributing very well to the film right from his entry. This is another big stage for the actor, and he comes out with flying colors and is all set for the next, the biggest yet.
Vinoth Kishan too, is almost perfect in a role that plays to his strengths. The entire cast come to the party in style, as there is not a single character who looks out of place or could be avoided.
Vignarajan’s excellent vision finds more friends in the form of the technical team who give in their best bits to the product. The cinematography deserves a special mention for some amazing frames which will be snapped and shared all round on social media, and it wouldn’t work so well if not for the skilful editing that keeps the film on its toes always. The music by Pradeep Kumar is an added advantage, as he keeps the tone of the film on his mind and delivers accordingly.
Andhaghaaram is indeed a long film to watch, and has a climax that doesn’t actually fire on all cylinders. But nevertheless, this is a film to be watched for sure, and Vignarajan makes sure that his debut is crackling and convincing from the word go. Andhaghaaram Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas
