A punchy, engaging thriller.
MPME is a good outing for director Rahesh, who can proudly put on this one as a shiny badge hereon. With some more attention to detail, it would have been a thriller to remember. Nevertheless, it comes out as a film that will not be a waste of your time.

2016 gave us a racy thriller in Metro, directed by Ananda Krishnan. The film was bent on the chain-snatching crimes that go around in the city, but decided to portray its story with heavy loads of violence and hurting visuals. This week’s release Marainthirunthu Paarkum Marmam Enna too deals with the same topic of chain-snatching, but does it with a commercial approach that is friendlier to the audience.
The film follows Japan (Aiyappan, who names himself this way for a funny reason) and the route which he takes to find his way into the chain-snatching gang and become a big shot. Of course, there are many sub-plots involving romance angles, cops, victims and more. Without wasting any time, director Rahesh jumps straight into the story and tries to pack in as many thrills as possible. He even attempts using a different narrative style by jumping around with the timeline, and though it may be slightly confusing and has continuity issues, it is good to watch. The advantage here is that the surprises keep coming and that the narrative is held in a crisp form that does not give space to needless elements. The final act of the film may be predictable, but that does not hinder the fact that it is watchable.
Dhruvva puts in a neat performance and gives the film what it needs on the baseline. He may not be the best bet to pull of heavily emotional sequences and swag moments, but his tall presence does give way for hero material. Aishwarya Dutta fails to make a mark despite having a good bunch of scenes in hand, but on the other hand, newbie Anjana Prem has a lovely presence. The rest of the supporting cast come to the fore with decent performances that fit the bill.
Cinematography PG Muthaih is apt, as the skilled camerawork is exhibited in the action sequences and the aerial shots. At a runtime of just 114 minutes, there is no big lag as the film seamlessly flows for the majority of its portions. Achu Rajamani’s music is a huge pillar and deserves more attention than what it has got now, it’s time for the composer to do big films – he is ready.
Toting up, Marainthirunthu Paarkum Marmam Enna is a good outing for director Rahesh, who can proudly put on this one as a shiny badge hereon. With some more attention to detail, it would have been a thriller to remember. Nevertheless, it comes out as a film that will not be a waste of your time.
