Kaatru Veliyidai Songs Review

Review Overview

Nallai Allai
Azhagiye
Vaan Varuvaan
Saarattu Vandiyila
Tango Kelaayo
Jugni

A surefire musical treat.

AR Rahman's first Tamil album of the year is an eclectic mix, having its melodies and quick tracks in the right balance. The album neatly stays up to the respect given to the combo, and does have shades of both the vintage and advanced Rahman. If the film delivers visuals equal to the music, we are in for a treat. Trust me.

Cast: Karthi, Aditi Rao Hydari

Music: AR Rahman

Lyrics: Vairamuthu, Karky, Shellee

Director: Maniratnam

Label: Sony Music

Nallai Allai: Singers – Sathyaprakash, Chinmayi

A very simplistic orchestration with fitting sounds and renditions by Sathyaprakash. Nothing big, not small either.

Azhagiye: Singers – Arjun Chandy, Haricharan, Jonita Gandhi

At first, this song sure sounded like something usual. But with repeated listens, it cleanly exhibited its jolly class. If not for the Punjabi mix, this is proper stuff. Our PICK.

Vaan Varuvaan: Singer – Shaasha Tirupati

After a really long time, AR Rahman delivers a pure melody which never punches above its weight. Shashaa Tirupati is in sublime nick here, with the butterfly flap sounds and the chorus additions being an asset. Near perfect, if you can call it. Another PICK.

Saarattu Vandiyila: Singers – AR Raihanah, Tippu and Nikita Gandhi

Despite the accusations, its just impossible to stay away from this incredibly catchy number. It’s great to see Raihanah being offered the centre stage, and she does make full use of the opportunity along with Tippu’s wonderful support. The next PICK.

Tango Kelaayo: Singers – Haricharan and Diwakar

Illustrative experiments with the musical portions, coming from a high class dance scene. Will go down as an innovative display, but will definitely take its time to hold up.

Jugni: Singers – AR Rahman, Tejinder Singh, Rajakumari, Shikara

Energy from the word go. It’s not always that you get a Hindi song in a Tamil film, wrapped around with rap. AR Rahman’s voice is the silver lining to this peach of a track which should act as a mood booster, anyday. Our final PICK.
