Technical Aspects

Light-hearted, likable fare.

Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum somewhat succeeds in its attempt to emerge as a jocund tale without overt romance. Nalan’s whacky mix of the underworld, employment issues and the cash crunch works well for most parts, thanks to the presence of its lead pair who make this film stick around. As the title translates down to ‘Love Too Shall Pass’, Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum is time pass.

The second film. It is extremely important in the career of every director, as it can do wonders to stronghold the promises fulfilled through the first. Few directors have gone to hit the bull’s eye, while the others have branched down, sometimes never to return. The case in point here is Nalan Kumarasamy, who comes up with a Korean remake after the impressive Soodhu Kavvum.

Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum for starters, is a film which sits on a different page if you compare it to his debut. Leaving it at that, it is an impact-free comic episode delivering two hours of laugh-worthy comedy which does not wear out until a small roadblock at the end. And most of this comedy comes from the source of Vijay Sethupathy, who silver lines the film with his incredible act. With his unique potential to get the best out of what might seem to be a dreary scene on paper, he belts out a performance which helps you sit through the film, even though it depicts shades of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan and Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara.

Most of Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum is shot on a single street, more so in two opposite apartments. While the thug in Vijay Sethupathy occupies one, Madonna Sebastian as the struggling engineer sports a decent show clad in a role sans make-up. Though her prowess is quite limited, the craze spreading the scene creates enough attention. With these two characters gobbling up most of the screen space, it is left to Samudhrakani who raises eyebrows in a minimalistic, mainstream role.

Dinesh Krishnan must be lauded for his part here, for he seems to know how exactly he should go about a film of this sort. The same praise for the rest of the tech team as well, be it the cuts or the coloring. On the other hand, Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum goes on to become one of Santosh Narayanan’s weakest works, especially the background score which doesn’t tick at all.

While the question about Nalan’s choice for his sophomore outing still remains unanswered, Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum somewhat succeeds in its attempt to emerge as a jocund tale without overt romance. Nalan’s whacky mix of the underworld, employment issues and the cash crunch works well for most parts, thanks to the presence of its lead pair who make this film stick around. As the title translates down to ‘Love Too Shall Pass’, Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum is time pass.
