An interesting premise but a tepid effort!

With an interesting premise backed up a generous dose of comedy, Vai Raja Vai starts off really well in the first half but only to end up highly disappointing courtesy a tepid, uninteresting second half.

With an interesting premise backed up a generous dose of comedy, Vai Raja Vai starts off really well in the first half but only to end up highly disappointing courtesy a tepid, uninteresting second half. Aishwarya has pulled off a casting coup in the film with an ensemble cast that’s adequately entertaining but not utilized to the fullest.

The story begins with the abduction of Gautham Karthik, who is gifted with extra sensory perception from his child-hood. All his intuitions turn out exactly true in the real life. However, Gautham’s father, played by Vasanth, takes a promise that he should never use it in the future come what may. Few years later, Gautham is forced to use his intelligence in a life-threatening situation and more troubles follow him endlessly putting his friends and family also under risk. How Gautham Karthik escapes and rescues everyone forms the story.

The first half starts beautifully with a back-story of Gautham’s child-hood. Vivek and Sathish’s situational comedy and wisecracks set the house on fire in the first forty five minutes. The momentum really picks up before the interval setting the stage nicely for the second half. And, then comes the huge let down. The second half is aimlessly drifting without any engaging element to keep us hooked. Dhanush’s cameo in the climax is a riot.

The Kokki Kumar character is superbly brought on screen and his histrionics are portrayed brilliantly. Yuvan Shankar Raja has truly made a comeback with his cheerful and lively background score after delivering rocking tunes in the album.

Velraj’s frames in the cruise scenes are real good. Taapsee once again impressed with her cameo, but her part was not etched neatly and could have been better. The hints for the sequel are quite evident and we hope the team comes back with a bang next time when they join hands.
