Pretentiously Funny!

Director Ramesh Rangasamy’s Ponge Ezhu Manohara is pretentiously funny and loaded with clichés usually associated with a village drama. The only comforting factor in the film is Singam Puli, whose good-timed one-liners and slap stick comedy with Irfan, who plays the lead role Manoharan, are the highlights of the film which is otherwise unamusing.

Irfan and Singam Puli are happy-go-lucky friends who indulge in petty activities in the village. Irfan is a milkman-cum-amateurish theater artist and Singam Puli heads the drama troupe and aspires to stage a complete drama at least once in his life, but his efforts goes in vain every time and get jinxed by either natural incidents or accidents, which are unintentionally funny. There are two love stories in the film which are completely unnecessary to the main plot. And, the climax is quite contradicting to the entire narration and ends up being a letdown.

Looks like Tamil cinema has fallen into the trap of ending the film on an emotionally high note. We get bucket load of films like this without any earnest intentions or story-telling to achieve the same. Instead, a more contrived scenario is offered to make things comfortable and feel heavy in the climax. Ponge Ezhu Manohara is no such exception with its drilling runtime which mostly concentrates on two needless subplots which are no way related to the main premise which the director wants to empathise.

Irfan has delivered a good performance as Manoharan. His cries and screams in the climax go unnoticed thanks to Ramesh’s schmaltzy emotions. The kitschy screenplay and a half-hearted execution are what make the film a tiresome watch.
