Debutant film-maker Jagadesh’s Nanbenda is a poorly written, half-baked comedy that largely depends on Santhanam’s histrionics and Nayanthara’s curvaceous figure, which the cameraman Balasubramaniem utilizes to the fullest with frequent slow mo shots of her pleasing gaits. Barring few moments of laughter from Santhanam, the film is a drag that never ceases to end with bizarrely written characters and a most chafing premise of a-boy-falling-head-over-heels-in-love-with-a-girl. However, the problem is not with the premise per se, but the way it’s written and thought out.

Sample this: Few moments after Ramya (Nayanthara) falls in love with Sathya (Udhay), she decides to reveal something bitter about her past which she has not shared with anyone else. It goes like this – Few years back, in a petty quarrel, Ramya kicks a dog for her defence and it succumbs to death. Ramya gets arrested by the police and the judge sentences her to 10 days of imprisonment. Ramya has been battling with guilt for a long time because she was jailed. The Why doesn’t matter to her. After hearing this extremely harebrained flashback, Sathya bursts out in laughter. Ramya gets offended and leaves infuriated. How Sathya convinces Ramya forms the second half.

Nannbenda is a wholly amateurish romantic comedy with badly written segues between comedy and romance. Nayanthara looks gorgeous, angelic and oozes stunning glamour in songs with lovely expressions that will indeed make you fall head over heels in love with her. Udhayanidhi, without doubt, has bettered his previous performances. Though Santhanam has not emerged fully successful with his witty wisecracks, he occasionally does manage to put a smile on your face.
