Amma Kanakku revels with simple writing and a social message for parents to understand their kids better and how they wish to be in a competitive environment. A simple back drop in the city and a well calculated making are the film’s highlights. Amala Paul leads from the front and expresses her character quietly, supported by Revathi, Samuthrakani and others.

Amala Paul as a young widow is a delight to watch and what pain she goes through to make her daughter understand her dreams and in guiding her to victory is emoted as a good drama. Yuvasri as Amala’s daughter has used her space effectively. Her egoistic character in not perceiving the limits of life has been portrayed well.

Yuvasri as Abinaya struggles at school not because she is incapable but situation around her makes her lazy to study and fails to dream big. As a mother, Amala Paul stings her daughter’s ego by going back to school to compete with her in the same class. This makes Yuvasri angry at times and at the same time she finds a reason to study just to cross over her mother, becoming tough at times.

Amala Paul manages to make her daughter dream and achieve something that she failed to do. What Amala Paul does as a mother to make her daughter realize the real situation is filled with emotions, realistic situations, and lively characters, making Amma Kanaku a watchable film. Despite a simplistic screenplay, the scenes, performances and dialogues have been emotional throughout with good directorial touch.

On the performances, Amala Paul and Yuvasri are all over the film and have done fairly well. With very little to do, Revathi, Samuthrakani and the students in school have put in their acting skills in right proportions. All the songs are shot like montages with a pleasant BGM, thanks to the Maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Cinematography and editing are clear and candid and overall, Amma Kannaku is a pleasing experience with a light hearted message and a gentle dedication to all the mothers of this society.
